Questions When Shopping for a Vacuum

Regular vacuuming is the best way to keep carpeting looking beautiful longer. It removes dirt and grit that can damage carpet fibers. For years vacuums didn’t change much. Now there are a more manufacturers and model choices. Some models have new features while others incorporate colorful and appealing designs and marketing strategies. In a recent study many established vacuum lines and newer makes and models underwent rigorous testing. The study focused on the most important criteria in vacuum selection, function and durability.

  • Bag or Bagless? – Top bag and bagless models score well on emissions tests, meaning little dust is spewed while in use. However, models with bags hold more dirt. And, tests prove emptying a bagless model is a messy chore because it is difficult to prevent dust from spreading.
  • How many tools? – Useful attachments include telescoping wands and basic upholstery and crevice tools. Some new tools, just aren’t worth it. Also, powered brushes do not work any better than traditional designs in removing dirt and pet hair.
  • What do you vacuum? – Most vacuum cleaning tasks involve floors and carpets. The majority of models clean floors well. The best do a good job on carpeting as well. Recommend a model that works best on surfaces in your customer’s home.
  • What’s the airflow and noise level? – Models that maintain the best airflow reduce the frequency of bag changing or emptying. Also, some vacuums produce noise with decibels high enough to consider wearing ear protection.
  • How much does the vacuum weigh? – It’s important that the model is easy to use. Many top models weigh under 20 pounds.
